You’re lying.
Right now. About something.
Maybe it’s small. "I’ll start on Monday." "I don’t really care." "I’m fine."
Maybe it’s big. "I’m not talented enough." "Nobody will hire me." "I missed my chance."
The worst lies aren’t the ones people tell you. The worst lies are the ones you tell yourself.
Because when you lie to yourself, you become your own prison guard. You lock the door. You throw away the key. And then you complain that you’re stuck.
Stop lying to yourself.
Truth hurts for 5 minutes. Lies hurt for 5 years.
1. The 7 lies that keep you broke, stuck, and tired
Let’s call them out.
Lie 1: "I don’t have time" You have time. You have 24 hours. You spend 3 on TikTok, 2 on Netflix, 1 scrolling. You don’t have time because you’re spending it on comfort. Say: "It’s not a priority." That’s the truth.
Lie 2: "I’m waiting for the right time" The right time was 2 years ago. The second right time is today. The wrong time is "later." Later is where dreams go to die.
Lie 3: "I’m not good enough" You’re not good enough yet. Nobody is good on day 1. You get good by doing bad work until it’s good work. "Not good enough" is just fear wearing a mask.
Lie 4: "I need more money/resources/support first" You need to start with what you have. Phone. Brain. Data. People built million-naira businesses from a phone. You’re not missing resources. You’re missing reps.
Lie 5: "What if I fail?" What if you don’t? What if you try and it works? What if you try, fail, learn, and win 6 months later? "what if I fail" is just your brain trying to keep you safe and small.
Lie 6: "It’s too late for me" Colonel Sanders started KFC at 65. The average millionaire makes their first million at 45. You are not late. You’re just early in the story you haven’t started yet.
Lie 7: "I’m fine where I am" If you were fine, you wouldn’t be frustrated. You wouldn’t be reading this. You wouldn’t feel that ache at 2am. You’re not fine. You’re comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s different.
Which lie are you living in? Pick it. Kill it.
2. Why we lie to ourselves
We lie for 3 reasons:
1. To avoid pain Truth means work. Truth means risk. Truth means admitting you wasted time. Lies are softer.
2. To protect ego "I didn’t get the job because they’re tribalistic" feels better than "I didn’t get the job because I didn’t prepare." One makes you a victim. One makes you responsible. We pick victim because it’s easier.
3. To stay comfortable If you admit you’re lying, you have to change. And change is uncomfortable. So you stay in the lie. And stay stuck.
But comfortable and stuck is still stuck.
3. The Truth Audit: 10 questions to ask yourself tonight
Get a pen. No phone. Answer fast.
1. What goal have I said I want for over 6 months but done nothing about? 2. What am I spending time on that I know is wasting me? 3. What skill do I keep saying "I’ll learn later"? 4. Who am I jealous of and why? 5. What excuse do I use most? 6. What am I afraid people will find out about me? 7. What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? 8. What am I tolerating that I shouldn’t? 9. If I died today, what would I regret not doing? 10. What’s the one truth I’ve been avoiding?
Read your answers. That’s your map. That’s where the lies are hiding.
4. How to stop lying: The 24-Hour Truth Rule
For the next 24 hours, do this:
Rule 1: No "I’ll do it later" If it takes less than 10 minutes, do it now. Reply. Clean. Send. Pay.
Rule 2: Say the real reason Not "I’m busy." Say "I chose to watch TV instead." Not "I can’t afford it." Say "I chose to spend on something else." Ownership kills lies.
Rule 3: Do 1 thing you’ve been avoiding The email. The apology. The application. The post. Pick it and do it today.
Lies die in action. Truth is built in reps.
5. The cost of lying to yourself
Let’s be real about the price:
Financial cost: You stay in a job you hate 3 extra years because you lied and said "it’s stable." You don’t start the business because you lied and said "I need more capital."
Time cost: 2 years of "I’ll start next month" = 730 days gone.
Mental cost: Lying creates anxiety. Because part of you knows the truth. And that part never sleeps.
Relationship cost: You lie and say "I’m fine" until you explode. You lie and say "I don’t care" until you lose people.
The interest on lies is regret. And regret compounds daily.
6. Truth is violent, but it sets you free
Truth will feel like this:
"I wasted 2 years." → Hurts. "I’m responsible for where I am." → Hurts. "I’m scared, not unqualified." → Hurts.
But 2 weeks later: "I wasted 2 years, so I’m starting today." → Freedom. "I’m responsible, so I can change it." → Power. "I’m scared, so I’ll do it scared." → Movement.
Truth is a short-term pain for long-term power. Lies are short-term comfort for long-term prison.
Pick your pain.
7. Stories of people who chose truth
The Graduate Lied for 3 years: "There are no jobs." Truth: "I only applied to 10 jobs and gave up." He admitted it. Applied to 5 jobs a day for 60 days. Got 3 offers. Truth got him hired.
The Creator Lied: "My content is bad because the algorithm hates me." Truth: "I post once a month and it’s lazy." She admitted it. Posted 4 times a week for 90 days. Hit 20k followers. Truth grew her.
The Man in Debt Lied: "I’m broke because of the economy." Truth: "I spend 50k monthly on things I don’t need." He tracked it. Cut 30k. Paid debt in 11 months. Truth freed him.
Your breakthrough is hiding behind a truth you’re avoiding.
8. How to talk to yourself without lies
Stop saying: "I’ll try." → Say "I will." or "I won’t." "I’m not a morning person." → Say "I haven’t trained myself to wake up early." "I’m just unlucky." → Say "I haven’t put in enough reps yet." "I’m not motivated." → Say "I’m going to do it anyway."
Language creates reality. Lying language creates a lying life.
9. What to do when the truth is ugly
Sometimes truth is: "I’m behind." "I messed up." "I’m not as far as I should be."
Don’t run from it. Sit with it for 10 minutes. Grieve it. Then ask: "What’s the next right action?"
Truth without action = depression. Truth with action = transformation.
You’re allowed to be mad at the truth. You’re not allowed to live in a lie because of it.
10. A letter to yourself with no lies
Write this. Read it out loud.
"Dear me, Stop lying. You do have time. You are scared, not incapable. You are not late. You are not stuck. You are choosing to stay. Nobody is coming. Nobody owes you. But you owe you. So today, we tell the truth and we move. Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s late. Even if it’s hard. Die later. Win first. Love, Future You"
Closing: Choose truth or choose the lie
You have two lives in front of you.
Life A: The Lie "I’ll start someday." "I’m not ready." "It’s not my fault." 5 years pass. Same place. More regret. More excuses.
Life B: The Truth "I’m behind and that’s on me." "I’m scared but I’ll start anyway." "I have what I need to take step 1." 5 years pass. Different life. Scars. Results. Peace.
Both will be hard. One hard makes you smaller. One hard makes you bigger.
Stop lying to yourself. You already know what you need to do. You’ve known for months.
Do it today. Tired. Scared. Late. But do it.
Because the only person you can’t fool forever... is you.
*_Truth first. Work second. Win. Die later._*
