If "steal ideas" is the strategy, then these 3 types of theft are the playbook.
Most people only know Type 1. Amateurs copy products. Professionals copy systems and distribution too. Empires are built by people who steal all 3.
Let’s break them down.
---
THE BIG IDEA
There are only 3 things worth stealing in business:
1. THE IDEA - What they sell 2. THE SYSTEM - How they run it 3. THE DISTRIBUTION - How they get customers
Steal 1 and you have a business. Steal 2 and you have an advantage. Steal all 3 and you build an empire.
---
TYPE 1: STEAL THE IDEA "Same concept. New container."
This is the most obvious one. Take what’s already working and put it in front of a different person.
HOW IT WORKS
The core concept stays the same. The packaging changes.
Examples: - Uber = Taxis + App - Airbnb = Hotels + People’s houses - Zoom = Meetings + Your laptop - Netflix = Blockbuster + Mail + Then internet - Flutterwave = Stripe + Africa
They didn’t invent the idea. They re-containerized it.
WHY IT WORKS
1. Proof of demand exists. People already understand what it is. 2. You don’t educate the market. You just redirect it. 3. It’s fast. You skip the 2 years of "will anyone buy this?"
THE 4 WAYS TO STEAL AN IDEA
1. GEOGRAPHIC THEFT Take what works in Country A and bring it to Country B.
What’s big in the US today will be big in Nigeria in 12-18 months. What’s big in Lagos today will be big in Benin City in 6 months.
Examples: - Food delivery apps in the US → Chowdeck, Glovo in Nigeria - US fitness coaches on TikTok → Nigerian coaches on WhatsApp - UK thrift stores → Lagos thrift markets
Your job: Be the bridge.
2. DEMOGRAPHIC THEFT Take what works for Group A and sell it to Group B.
Same product. Different person.
Examples: - "Trading course for men"→ "Trading course for women" - "Gym for bodybuilders" → "Gym for new moms" - "Marketing agency for tech" → "Marketing agency for churches"
The product barely changes. The messaging changes everything.
3. PRICE THEFT Take a premium product and make it cheap. Or take a cheap product and make it premium.
Examples: - Uniqlo stole luxury fashion and made it affordable - Apple took computers and made them luxury - Airtel data bundles took internet and made it daily/weekly
Ask: "Who can’t afford this right now?" Or: "Who would pay 3x more for a better version?"
4. FORMAT THEFT Take the content and change the format.
Examples: - YouTube course → WhatsApp course - Book → Audio summary - In-person class → PDF + Videos - Long podcast → 30-second clips
People don’t want new ideas. They want the same idea in a format that fits their life.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR TYPE 1
Today, find 1 business that’s working in another country or city. Ask: "How can I sell this to a different person, in a different place, at a different price?"
That’s your first stolen idea.
---
TYPE 2: STEAL THE SYSTEM "Same industry. Better engine."
This is where the money is. Amateurs copy products. Professionals copy how the business runs behind the scenes.
HOW IT WORKS
Don’t steal what they sell. Steal HOW they sell it. HOW they deliver it. HOW they operate.
The system is the invisible part. And invisible parts are hard to copy.
Examples:
McDonald’s stole the factory assembly line from car manufacturers and put it in a kitchen. Result: Food in 90 seconds.
Amazon stole the Sears catalog model and put it online. Result: Everything in 2 days.
Toyota stole quality control from American factories and added "Kaizen." Result: Cars that don’t break.
Dangote stole the cement production system from Europe and scaled it for Africa. Result: Cheapest cement on the continent.
THE 5 SYSTEMS WORTH STEALING
1. OPERATIONS SYSTEM How they produce, deliver, and fulfill.
Steal from: Restaurants, logistics companies, factories. Apply to: Your service business, your brand, your agency.
Example: A restaurant’s "ticket system" → Use it for client work in your design agency.
2. SALES SYSTEM How they get people to pay.
Steal from: Insurance agents, real estate agents, car dealers. They are the best closers on earth.
Apply their scripts, their follow-ups, their urgency to your online business.
3. MARKETING SYSTEM How they get attention consistently.
Steal from: News companies, TV stations, big brands. They have to show up every day whether they feel like it or not.
That’s a system. Copy the calendar, not just the ad.
4. CUSTOMER SERVICE SYSTEM How they keep people.
Steal from: Banks, telecoms, airlines. They deal with angry people all day and still keep them.
Steal their FAQ, their escalation process, their retention offers.
5. MONEY SYSTEM How they handle cash, reinvest, and scale.
Steal from: Franchises. They figured out how to make the business run without the owner. That’s the system you want.
HOW TO REVERSE-ENGINEER A SYSTEM
1. Buy the product. Experience it end to end. 2. Map the steps. From ad → sale → delivery → follow-up. 3. Ask "why". Why this price? Why this timeline? Why this bonus? 4. Steal the framework. Not the exact words. The structure. 5. Install it in your business.
You’re not copying. You’re installing better software.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR TYPE 2
Pick your #1 competitor. Go buy their product. Write down every single step they took to get your money. That’s their system. Now build a better version.
---
TYPE 3: STEAL THE DISTRIBUTION "Same product. Better audience."
This is the most powerful theft of all. Because the best product in the world loses to the worst product with the best distribution.
THE BRUTAL TRUTH
Ideas are cheap. Attention is expensive.
If no one sees your product, it doesn’t exist.
Examples:
TikTok creators stole YouTube video formats and put them in 15 seconds. Same ideas. New distribution. Billions of views.
Brands stole podcast audiences by sponsoring shows. Same product. New ears.
Gumroad creators stole Twitter audiences and sold PDFs. Same knowledge. New buyers.
Influencers stole TV celebrity status and sold it to brands. Same influence. New channel.
THE 4 DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS TO STEAL
1. STEAL PEOPLE’S AUDIENCES You don’t need your own audience on day 1.
- Guest on podcasts - Collaborate with influencers - Get featured on newsletters - Do joint Lives
You’re borrowing distribution. Then you convert it to your own.
2. STEAL PLATFORMS Go where attention already is.
Right now: TikTok, WhatsApp Status, YouTube Shorts, Threads. Don’t build a website first. Build where people already scroll.
The platform is doing the distribution for you.
3. STEAL FORMATS THAT WORK If "30-day challenges" are blowing up, do a 30-day challenge. If "day in the life" videos work, do day in the life. If "before and after" posts sell, do before and after.
The format is the distribution hack. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Steal the wheel that’s already rolling.
4. STEAL COMMUNITY Facebook groups. WhatsApp groups. Telegram channels. Discord. These are pre-built audiences with trust.
Join. Add value. Become known. Then offer your product.
THE DISTRIBUTION FORMULA
Attention → Trust → Offer → Sale
Most people try to go straight to "Offer → Sale." That’s why they fail.
Steal distribution by giving value first. Give 10 pieces of free value. Then ask for the sale.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT FOR TYPE 3
1. List 5 people who already have your audience. 2. DM them: "Can I give your audience free value? No pitch." 3. Show up. Over-deliver. 4. At the end, invite them to your thing.
You just stole distribution.

HOW TO COMBINE ALL 3 TYPES
This is how empires are built.
CASE STUDY: A FOOD BUSINESS
Type 1: Steal the Idea Shawarma + delivery is already working in Lagos.
Type 2: Steal the System Steal Domino’s "30-minute delivery guarantee" system. Steal a restaurant’s kitchen workflow.
Type 3: Steal the Distribution Partner with 5 campus influencers. Post "day in the life of a shawarma vendor" on TikTok. Join UNIBEN WhatsApp groups and add value first.
Result: Same idea. Better system. Better distribution. You win.
---
THE LEGAL LINE
Let me be very clear so you don’t get sued.
LEGAL TO STEAL: - Ideas - Systems - Strategies - Marketing angles - Business models
ILLEGAL TO STEAL: - Trademarks - Copyrighted content word-for-word - Patented technology - Their logo, name, brand
Copy the logic. Not the logo. Copy the framework. Not the exact words. Copy the strategy. Not the identity.
If you’re scared, add a twist. That’s what makes it yours.
---
THE MINDSET OF A THIEF
Empire builders think like this:
1. "Who’s already winning?" - Find them 2. "What are they doing?" - Deconstruct it 3. "What are they missing?" - Find the gap 4. "How can I do it 10% better?" - Add your twist 5. "How can I reach people faster?" - Steal distribution
No shame. No ego. Just execution.
---
YOUR 7-DAY THEFT PLAN
Day 1-2: Type 1. Find 3 ideas working elsewhere. Pick 1 to localize. Day 3-4: Type 2. Buy a competitor’s product. Map their system. Day 5-6: Type 3. Find 5 people with your audience. Offer free value. Day 7: Launch your version with all 3 types combined.
Do this once and you’ll understand why copying beats creating.
---
FINAL WORD
You don’t need to be original. You need to be observant.
The world is full of working ideas, working systems, and working distribution channels. Your job is not to invent them. Your job is to steal them, improve them, and scale them.
*_Steal the idea to start. Steal the system to grow. Steal the distribution to win._*
That’s the 3-part playbook. Now go use it.
